The knowledge test on this page gets you your learner permit. The Hazard Perception Test comes later: it's a separate, computer-based test you must pass before you can book your practical drive test in Victoria.
You watch video scenes from the driver's seat and react appropriately to what's developing — slowing down, stopping or maintaining your speed. It measures how early you spot a hazard forming, not your knowledge of road rules.
Once you're at least 17 years and 11 months old and hold a current car learner permit. Because you must pass it before you can book the practical drive test, it naturally sits near the end of the learner journey.
Transport Victoria publishes nine free official practice tests that look just like the real thing — do them more than once. On the road, practise the same skill: scan well ahead, watch pedestrians, cyclists and trams, and call hazards out loud to your supervisor before they develop.
Failing costs you only the retry: nothing else resets, and your permit keeps its standing. Treat the first attempt as calibration for the timing the test wants.
