FAQs for Instructors.
Everything you need to know about joining DriveBuddy
Getting Started
What is DriveBuddy?
DriveBuddy is a platform that connects learner drivers with independent driving instructors across Australia. We handle booking, payments, and scheduling so you can focus on teaching.
How do I become an instructor on DriveBuddy?
Visit our instructor application page to apply. You'll need to provide details about your qualifications, insurance, and vehicle. We'll review your application and get back to you.
Is there a cost to join?
There's no upfront cost to join DriveBuddy. We charge a commission on completed lessons, which is deducted before your payout.
How long does the application process take?
Most applications are reviewed within a few business days. You'll need to provide all required documentation before your profile can go live.
Can I use DriveBuddy alongside my existing business?
Yes! Many instructors use DriveBuddy to fill gaps in their schedule or reach new learners. You set your own availability and prices.
Requirements & Eligibility
What are the requirements to be an instructor?
You must have:
- A valid driving instructor licence/accreditation for your state or territory
- A current Working With Children Check (where required by your state)
- Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance with at least $20 million public liability coverage
- A roadworthy, registered vehicle with dual controls (where required by law)
What documentation do I need to provide?
You'll need to upload copies of:
- Your driving instructor licence
- Your Working With Children Check card or certificate
- Your certificate of currency for insurance
- Your vehicle registration
What if my licence or insurance expires?
You must notify DriveBuddy immediately and provide updated documentation. Your profile may be temporarily suspended until valid documents are provided.
Can I teach in multiple vehicles?
Yes, you can register multiple vehicles on the platform. Each vehicle must meet our requirements and be properly insured.
Pricing & Payments
Can I set my own prices?
Yes! You have full control over your lesson prices. You can set different rates for different lesson durations, vehicle types, or service areas.
How much does DriveBuddy charge?
DriveBuddy charges a commission on completed lessons. The commission is deducted from the lesson fee before your payout. Contact us for current rates.
When do I get paid?
Payments are settled to your nominated bank account based on the Platform's payout schedule after lessons are marked as completed.
What happens if a learner doesn't pay?
Learners pay at the time of booking, so payment is secured before the lesson. You'll never have to chase payments.
Do I need to handle GST?
You're responsible for your own tax obligations, including GST if you're registered. DriveBuddy does not provide tax advice - consult a qualified tax professional for your situation.
Managing Bookings
How do I set my availability?
You control your calendar through your instructor dashboard. Set the times you're available and learners can only book those slots.
What if I need to cancel a lesson?
Cancel through the Platform as soon as possible. The learner receives an immediate credit return. See our Instructor Cancellation Policy for full details.
Are there consequences for cancelling?
We understand that genuine emergencies happen. However, excessive cancellations may affect your visibility in search results or standing on the platform. Cancelling a learner's first booking is treated particularly seriously.
What if a learner cancels within 24 hours?
You're entitled to keep 100% of the lesson fee as a late cancellation fee. However, you have the option to waive this fee and return the learner's Credits if you choose - this is entirely at your discretion.
How long do I have to decide on waiving a late cancellation fee?
You have 30 days from the date of the late cancellation to waive the fee. If you take no action, you'll automatically receive the lesson fee.
What if a learner doesn't show up?
A no-show is treated the same as a late cancellation - you're entitled to keep the full lesson fee.
Can I reschedule a booking?
Yes. You can propose a new time to the learner through the Platform. If you need to reschedule, do so as early as possible.
Platform Rules
Can I contact learners directly?
Communication should go through the Platform, except for immediate safety or last-minute pickup coordination. Sharing personal contact details to arrange off-platform bookings is prohibited.
What happens if I take bookings off-platform?
Taking learners off-platform to avoid fees is a serious breach of our Terms and may result in immediate removal from the platform, forfeiture of pending payments, and potential legal action.
What are my obligations under the Code of Conduct?
You must maintain professional standards, treat learners respectfully, deliver full lesson durations, and comply with all laws. See our Code of Conduct for full details.
How do reviews work?
After each lesson, learners can leave a review and rating. You cannot offer incentives for positive reviews or pressure learners about their feedback.
What if I receive a negative review?
Reviews are an important part of marketplace trust. If you believe a review is unfair or violates our policies, you can contact us to request a review.
What if I have a dispute with a learner?
Try to resolve issues directly first. If you can't reach a resolution, contact us and we'll help mediate. Remember that DriveBuddy is not a party to the Lesson Contract between you and the learner.
