Victoria HPT questions, answered

Where does the HPT sit in the licence journey?
Between your learner permit and your practical drive test: you can't take the drive test until the HPT is passed. It's the only test in the Victorian sequence scored on when you react rather than what you know, which is why it catches learners who breezed the knowledge test.
Do I have to go to a VicRoads office to sit it?
No — the test runs online through your myVicRoads account, and that first online attempt costs nothing. If it doesn't go your way you can pay to try again the same day, and current fees are on VicRoads' HPT page.
Can I respond early to be safe?
No — the test scores the timing of your response, and reacting before the hazard has actually developed doesn't demonstrate hazard perception. That's the exact instinct this trainer drills: hold until something on screen genuinely changes, then act.
What happens if I fail the HPT?
You can rebook and sit it again — your permit, your logged hours and your knowledge-test result all stand. After two unsuccessful online attempts in a day, the next attempt has to wait until tomorrow.
How long does an HPT pass last?
Twelve months. If you don't pass the practical drive test within 12 months of passing the HPT, you'll need to sit the HPT again — worth remembering if you pass it early with months of logbook hours still to go.
Is this simulator the same as the real test?
No — it's a warm-up for one specific skill. The real test plays full video scenes from the driver's seat; this trainer uses simplified overhead animations so you can drill response timing over and over. Treat a strong run here as readiness for the official practice tests, not as a predicted pass.
