Australian Capital Territory · Road Rules Knowledge Test · ACT licence rules

As an ACT learner or provisional driver, what may you legally do with a mobile phone while driving?

The answer

  • Send short text messages while stopped at traffic lights
  • Make or receive calls, provided the phone is mounted or fully hands-free
  • Follow directions from a navigation app you set up before driving, with the phone mounted or connected and no interaction of any kind on the move Correct
  • Anything a full licence holder may do, as long as the phone is in a cradle

Why that's the answer

The ACT bans learner and provisional drivers from all mobile phone use while driving, including calls through hands-free, Bluetooth, speaker and wearable devices. The one exception is navigation: you may follow a maps app that was set up before you started driving, with the phone mounted or connected by cable or Bluetooth, and you must not interact with it at all while driving (not even by voice). The hands-free calling allowance applies only to full licence holders.
