What does a speed limit sign actually tell you?

The answer

  • The speed you should aim to maintain
  • The maximum speed in good conditions — you should go slower in poor weather or hazardous conditions Correct
  • The minimum legal speed
  • The average speed expected over the trip

Why that's the answer

A speed limit is the maximum for good conditions. In poor weather or hazardous conditions you should drive at a lower speed to suit them — driving at the limit in heavy rain can still be an offence.
