During the wet season you reach a floodway where water is flowing across the road and you cannot see the road surface. What should you do?

The answer

  • Drive through quickly to create a bow wave
  • Follow the vehicle in front through at the same speed
  • Drive through slowly in a low gear
  • Do not cross — wait until the water level drops or find another route Correct

Why that's the answer

If you cannot see the road surface you cannot know whether it has washed away or what obstructions lie beneath, and fast-flowing water can float your vehicle — the handbook's rule is that if in doubt, do not cross. Wait for the level to drop, and never cross where ROAD CLOSED signs are in place. Crocodiles inhabit many waterways in the north. After any water crossing, dry your brakes by driving a short distance with gentle pressure on the pedal.
