New South Wales · Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) · Road safety

As the driver, what are you responsible for regarding your passengers' seatbelts?

The answer

  • Only passengers under 16
  • Making sure every passenger has their own seat and properly adjusted restraint, and stays buckled up for the trip Correct
  • Nothing — each passenger is responsible for themselves
  • Only your own seatbelt

Why that's the answer

The driver must ensure each passenger sits in their own seat fitted with a seatbelt, is secured in a properly adjusted seatbelt or approved child car seat, stays buckled up, and that nobody travels in an area not designed for passengers. Passengers aged 16 or older also carry their own responsibility.
