When you can sit it: Once you have held your learner's permit for at least six months and you are at least 16 years and six months old. Bring your learner's permit, or primary and secondary identification.

Pass the Computerised Theory Test to get your learner's permit. Once you've held it for 6 months and are at least 16 years and 6 months old, you can sit the Hazard Perception Test. From 17, with 50 supervised hours logged (5 at night) if you're under 25, you can sit the Practical Driving Assessment. Pass it and you go on to your P plates.
You display red P plates for the first 6 months, then green P plates for the remaining 18 months or until you turn 19, whichever is longer. On red Ps you can't drive between midnight and 5am and can carry only one passenger (exemptions apply to both). Your blood alcohol must be 0.00% the whole time you're on P plates.
Freeway merging, since the Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways run the length of the city, and roundabouts, which you'll meet across the suburbs. At a roundabout you give way to all traffic already on it and enter only when there's a safe gap.
